Cary Herz, a dear friend, excellent photographer and mentor of mine died Monday Sept. 1 from cancer at the age of 61. I just wanted to share a little bit about her and her accomplishments. She had a strong spirit and was always working on something new, even through her long battle with cancer.
In the early 70s she documented the women's movement for Ms. Magazine, and covered the first appearances of women in sports, which was later exhibited in the Smithsonian. Her most recent book, New Mexico's Crypto-Jews: Image and Memory, chronicled the descendants of New Mexico's crypto-Jews and won Best Nonfiction Book (religion) Award in 2008 from the National Federation of Press Women.
Cary also recently received the 2008 Communicator of Achievement Award, the highest honor bestowed by the National Federation of Press Women for exceptional achievement in the communications field, service to the community and to NFPW.
There was a scholarship established in her name, and if you're interested in donating any money to get the award rolling feel free to send any donations to
